What is Body Mass Index (BMI)?
This body mass index calculator gives you an instant screening number based on your height and weight. As an accurate bmi calculator for adults, it applies the same WHO classification used by clinicians to flag potential weight concerns. A high BMI can indicate high body fatness, but it does not directly measure body fat — it is a practical first-step assessment that correlates well with more precise measures.
Body Mass Index (BMI) is a person's weight in kilograms (or pounds) divided by the square of height in meters (or feet). The result places you in a category from Underweight to Obese, with the healthy bmi range 18.5–24.9 associated with the lowest risk of weight-related health issues.
BMI Formulas
For the Metric system: BMI = weight (kg) / height² (m²). For the Imperial system (US): BMI = (weight (lbs) / height² (in²)) × 703. Both formulas produce the same result — the 703 factor converts the US units to the standard kg/m² scale used by the World Health Organization.
Metric
kg / m²
e.g. 80 kg / (1.75 m)² = 26.1
Imperial
(lbs / in²) × 703
e.g. 180 lbs / (70 in)² × 703 = 25.8
